Holiday in my home country
Being a Filipino living abroad, we all wish we can always fly back to our home country to visit. It's that innate longing to go back and soak in the essence of our homeland, right? Some are lucky to visit more frequently than others because they have the time, the resources or just the means to go back home. I, on the other hand, took 12 years before I was able to go back and visit our home town in Caloocan. Ang tagal 'no? So you can just imagine my excitement when I realized that I was finally going back home! My heart was full, my suitcase packed, and memories waiting to be relived!
Culture shocked?
Did I have a sudden culture shock when I arrived at Manila International Airport? Surprisingly yes. So much have changed but I guess that was expected. But one thing I didn't expect or probably didn't realize was how much I did not miss the heat. IT WAS HOT! Thankfully some parts of our family's house had air-conditioning but in other places, you just have to do with electric-powered fans. I was also surprised to see a lot more high-rise buildings especially in the cities of Makati, Taguig and Mandaluyong. But the traffic has not changed I think. I would never dare drive there because I don't think I'll ever get used to the busy streets of the metro. When they say “bumper to bumper” traffic, it literally meant that!
It's more fun in the Philippines
One thing is for sure. There are a lot of great things to do in my home country. From the busy buzz of city centers to the calm and relaxing retreat of rural provinces, there's something for everyone in my family to experience and enjoy during any of our stays in the Philippines. And we'll always love it!
