Small mistakes tourists make in Amsterdam | Filipino mom's tips

You know what they say — traveling teaches you lessons you didn’t know you needed. And guess what? Amsterdam is a great teacher on that! When I moved here in the Netherlands, I thought I had figured things out. After all, I didn’t come straight from the Philippines. I moved from one first world country, to another. But I quickly learned that just because I’ve lived in Los Angeles, California for 10 years, doesn’t mean that I’ve seen it all and figured it all out. This gorgeous city has its own quirks. And you’ll probably make those rookie mistakes. Don’t worry, we all do. But if you want to be one step ahead, here’s what to watch out for.

1. Crossing the bike lane without looking both ways
Let’s start with the most common (and honestly, the most dangerous) mistake: not paying attention to bike lanes. In Amsterdam, cyclists rule the road. They really do. So whenever you see a red path on a side walk — that’s a bike lane. And the cyclists will ring their bells hard if you get in their way. So how do you avoid it? Always look left and right. When you’re out here, don’t just watch out for cars and trams, but for bikes!

Did you know that Dutch kids learn how to cycle here in The Netherlands at a very young age? see link below.

2. Trying to explore the city by car
Driving in Amsterdam as a tourist? I wouldn’t advise it. Unless you enjoy tiny streets, expensive parking, and getting lost in circles, then try to explore the city without it. Parking will cost more than your hotel stay. Plus the road signs are quite challenging with mostly traffic rules written in dutch. So to avoid it, I’d suggest you simply use the trams, buses or the metro. Even better, rent a bike or just walk. Everything is close anyways, and you’ll see certainly see way more of the city.

3. Calling the Netherlands “Holland” all the time
Technically, Holland is just a region in the Netherlands. So when you say “I’m in Holland,” you’re not totally wrong, but say if you’re from the Philippines, it’s like saying you’re in “Luzon”.  The country is called the Netherlands. So just remember this. The locals won’t get offended, but they’ll definitely know you’re a tourist.

Here's 10 reasons why I love The Netherlands, by the way. Check out the video below.

4. Not Booking Museum Tickets in Advance
Amsterdam’s museums are world-famous — Van Gogh Museum, Anne Frank House, Rijksmuseum — and they’re always packed. You can’t just walk in. Especially the Anne Frank House — it sells out weeks ahead! So how to avoid missing out on these experiences? Book online before your trip. And do note that some museums have time slots, so plan your days around them.

Have you also heard of Nemo Science museum? This is one is for the kiddos.. and for the grown ups too! It's a hands-on science paradise with interactive exhibits that makes science fun, engaging and just unforgettable. Make sure to visit when you're in town!

5. Assuming Everyone Accepts Cash
Here’s a weird one — some shops and restaurants in Amsterdam don’t accept cash. Others don’t take Visa or Mastercard. They prefer Maestro or Dutch debit cards. Lately however (and I’m saying the latter part of 2025), the government has proposed for most retailers to accept cash again. When this should take effect is still a discussion. But to avoid this dilemma when shopping or eating out, always check before you order or buy something. Or better yet, use contactless payment with your phone — this is widely accepted.

6. Ordering “coffee” and getting a surprise
This one is an ultimate oopsie if you didn’t know beforehand. A lot of tourists walk into a “coffeeshop” expecting a nice cappuccino... and end up in a cloud of smoke. Because in Amsterdam, a coffeeshop isn’t where you get coffee — it’s where you legally buy weed. So note to self: if you want actual coffee, go to a “café.” That’s where you’ll find your lattes and apple pie. Unless you’re curious — then by all means, enjoy this cultural experience. Just don’t bring the kids!

Final Thoughts
Traveling is fun but sometimes can be frustrating. But there’s always going to be stories that are worth telling. Whether you accidentally got yelled at by a cyclist or ended up in a “coffeeshop” instead of a café (oh yes, there’s a difference between them), it’s all part of the Amsterdam experience. So now worries, don’t stress too much. Even locals get it wrong sometimes.
