Castle De Haar: The Most Magical Family Day Trip from Amsterdam or Utrecht
Looking for a day trip that combines history, architecture, and fun for the whole family? Mahilig ba kayo sa mga castles?? Then let me introduce you to Castle De Haar (Kasteel de Haar), the largest and most luxurious castle in the Netherlands. Nestled near Utrecht, this fairy-tale castle offers a perfect blend of cultural enrichment and outdoor enjoyment for you and your family.
A Glimpse into History
Castle De Haar's origins date back to the 14th century. However, the castle we see today is the result of a grand restoration project that started in 1892 by Baron Etienne van Zuylen van Nijevelt and his wife, Baroness Hélène de Rothschild. They enlisted renowned Dutch architect Pierre Cuypers, known for designing the Rijksmuseum and Amsterdam Central Station, to rebuild the castle into a neo-Gothic masterpiece. The restoration, completed in 1912, transformed the ruins into a lavish residence equipped with modern amenities of the time, including electricity and central heating .
Exploring the Grounds
The castle is surrounded by a humungous 55-hectare park, featuring:
✅ Rose Garden: Home to over 1,200 roses in 79 different varieties, blooming beautifully every summer .
✅ Maze: A fun challenge for both kids and adults. My boys loved going there!
✅ Deer Park: A serene spot where you can observe deer in their natural habitat. Just don't feed them!
✅ Picnic Areas: Perfect for a family lunch amidst nature.
✅ Roman Garden: Featuring a Ha-Ha rampart and classical landscaping.
✅ Play Areas: Open spaces for kids to run and play safely. But note that strollers are only allowed at the park.
After exploring, you can enjoy refreshments at:
✅ Restaurant Laverie: Located on the Stable Square, offering a variety of meals and snacks.
✅ Café Tuynhuis: Situated within the park, perfect for a quick bite or coffee break.
